NEW YEAR, NEW YOU / ENERGY!

First, let me say that we’re introverts and posting about ourselves feels super unnatural. We love sharing the farm and our mission, but other than that we’d prefer to be in the background. However, we feel a deep sense of gratitude, and responsibility to pass this gift on and to help others. So here we go. If you would have told a non-athletic, generously described “husky,” 13 year-old me that one day I’d run 100 miles in 24 hours and post shirtless photos on the internet (after explaining to him what the internet was and telling him to buy Apple stock), he’d be shocked. We’re going to cover a bunch of helpful topics this month but let’s start with ENERGY 🔋 🏃‍♀️

As an adult I began to rewrite the narrative of being a couch potato as a child (ironic because now I LOVE potatoes and as a child I preferred pizza rolls) and embrace athletic endeavors, specifically running. As an entrepreneur my head is usually filled with tasks and ideas and being able to go for a run was such a refreshing way to de-stress and actually problem solve - my best inspiration usually comes from out of no where when I’m on the trail. Before going whole food plant based (WFPB) vegan these runs did come with a cost, recovery. Soreness, exhaustion, and what you might expect from exerting yourself. As many of you know we read “How Not To Die” which preaches the power of plants and we decided to give going WFPB vegan a try. Within days we had more energy and a few weeks in noticed something strange, we didn’t feel sore after working out like we used to. Meat, dairy, eggs and fish cause inflammation, working out also causes inflammation (the good kind), and our body can only handle so much. So if we remove the dietary inflammation we recover much quicker. And this is good because we had SO much more energy being WFPB we needed to burn it off. I slept harder and bounced out of bed in the morning with no more mid-day slump. My runs were longer, my mind was clearer, and I felt better than I ever had before. We never ever think about protein, calorie counting, worry about fruit having too much sugar (it doesn’t and you should eat it every chance you get) but noticed the main stumbling block for people considering going WFPB vegan was wondering if they’d have enough energy. This photo was taken on a 40 mile run (stopping to move a turtle off the road) and we’ve completed many ultra marathons (with Emma taking second place in her division), so trust me, you’ll have energy!

We’ll talk about a lot more this month but as the title, “NEW YEAR, NEW YOU” suggests we’re here to help you make a change in 2020. If there is anything we can do to help please let us know. We have a bunch of cooking classes and events coming up at Peacefield, we’d love to answer any questions, recommend resources, take you to the grocery store, etc. You can do it - and we’re here to help!
